Is Kuari Pass Trek Difficult
The Kuari Pass trek is graded as a moderate to difficult adventure. The trek does require a good level of fitness and endurance, especially due to the the long walks , distance being 55 kms approx, and the trek stretches to 7 days. Also the weather one chooses to do the trek – It is essentially famous for being a winter trek, however one can choose Spring time as well. Kuari Pass Trek is a longer than a harder trek. We at Mapping the Himalayas cover the original trail also known as the Lord Curzon Trail, starting from the village Ghat. It is accessible to both beginners and experienced trekkers as it does not require advanced trekking skills.
It does require a certain amount of vigour as one gains altitude although moderate to 4265 meters.As one climbs to the pass at 3800 meters and further to a small hill, one gets beautiful views of the Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Kamet. Acclimatization happens gradually as one gradually as one walks through different terrains each day.
The winter weather provides challenges of walking through thick snow and at night the temperatures can drop significantly. The daily walks can be between 8 to 15 kms, and the accents and decents can make it strenuous. It can be manageable with right kind of preparation of clothing and gears. But the beauty of the trek also is in winters when the entire place becomes a winter wonderland and providing incredible views.
Also the challenges of a winter trek is not there during Spring time or even early winters when the snow has not settled in.
Distance does mandate certain amount of rigour , however Kuari Pass Trek is known for the beautiful and panoramic views of the Greater Himalayas, reaching a pass and crossing forest swathes and meadows. Also walking through different villages and camping to enjoy the unspoilt view of the sky. It is an experience worth going for and at the same time a fulfilling challenging adventure.
