Gomukh Tapovan Trek

Gomukh Tapovan Trek

The Gomukh Tapovan Trek is among the most renowned and spiritually enriching treks in Uttarakhand, India. From Gangotri, the holy town dedicated to Goddess Ganga, this trek leads you to the Gaumukh Glacier — the actual source of the River Ganga — and beyond to Tapovan, a stunning high-altitude grassland at the foot of the imposing Mount Shivling. It’s the ideal mix of adventure, spirituality, and nature, making it one of the best Himalayan treks for both novice and experienced trekkers.

The Gomukh Tapovan Trek Route

Day 1: Rishikesh to Gangotri (3,100 m) Drive – 260 km / 10–11 hours

Your journey begins in Rishikesh, the gateway to the Himalayas. The long but scenic drive to Gangotri passes through the spiritual towns of Uttarkashi and Harsil Valley. The route runs along the Bhagirathi River, offering spectacular views of lush valleys and snow-capped mountains. Upon reaching Gangotri, visit the Gangotri Temple and spend the evening acclimatizing in this divine Himalayan town.

Day 2: Trek from Gangotri to Bhojbasa (3,780 m) – 14 km / 7–8 hours

The climb starts early morning on a well-defined path which runs alongside the Bhagirathi River. You’ll trek through pine and birch forests, passing over charming places such as Chirbasa (pine home). The tree line will thin out gradually and the ground turn rocky as you arrive at Bhojbasa, your evening camp. Here, take in your first unobstructed views of the Bhagirathi group of peaks (I, II & III) aglow in the setting sun.

Day 3: Bhojbasa to Gaumukh (4,050 m) and Tapovan (4,350 m) – 9 km / 7–8 hours

It is the pinnacle of the trek — reaching Gaumukh Glacier, the divine origin of the Ganga. The glacier has the shape of a cow’s mouth, so it is named Gaumukh. After some time here, keep going higher towards Tapovan, a big alpine meadow providing one of the most stunning campsites in the Indian Himalayas. Tapovan is at the foot of Mount Shivling (6,543 m), one of the finest and holiest peaks in India. The campsite provides a very beautiful view of Meru and Bhagirathi peaks. Camp for the night near Mauni Baba Ashram, amidst a starry sky.

Day 4: Visit Tapovan and Return to Bhojbasa – 6–7 hours

Wake up early to catch a breathtaking sunrise on Mount Shivling and the surrounding mountains. After breakfast, visit the Tapovan meadows, where numerous sadhus stay to meditate in the stillness of the Himalayas. The peaceful surroundings and spiritual atmosphere of this location are simply unique. Later, return to Bhojbasa, following the same path and taking photographs of the constantly changing scenery.

Day 5: Back Trek to Gangotri – 14 km / 6–7 hours, Gangnani drive – 50 km / 2–3 hours

Drive back down from Bhojbasa to Gangotri, where the trek comes to an end. From Gangotri, drive to Gangnani, famous for its natural hot springs, and relax and soothe your muscles after days of trekking.

Day 6: Gangnani to Rishikesh drive – 200 km / 8–9 hours

After breakfast, begin your way back to Rishikesh. The path again treats you with heavenly sights of the Himalayas, rivers, and valleys, bringing an end to an unforgettable Himalayan trekking experience.
